Would you like to know how to make your videos more professional and more engaging without cracking open your wallet to purchase yet another piece of video equipment?

My name is Lynn Ruby of RubyMarketingSystems.com and I want to share with you today a video tip on how to do just that.

Today’s video tip is to . . .

Forget Symmetry and Remember the Rule of Thirds.

Do you recall a few weeks ago when I told you that one of the reasons you don’t really care for the way you look on camera is because no human face is perfectly symmetrical?

In fact, VERY few things in nature are perfectly symmetrical. Think of the animals, the birds, trees and plants, even mountains and landscapes, they’re not symmetrical.

And so the human eye and the human brain has been trained to find asymmetry more engaging and more interesting.

Things that are perfectly symmetrical tend to be human-made. Robots and machines and buildings. They’re not as interesting to the human eye.

This setup looks amateurish!

So, thinking about this rule in video, remember the rule of thirds by doing the following. Divide your camera frame up into three vertical panels – side, middle and side. And never ever place yourself, or your main subject, smack dab in the middle of the frame.

It’s symmetrical and it’s boring to the human eye. Just like the image to the right.

Rather, place your main subject off to one side or the other. It’s more interesting.

You’ll see this play out in interior design as well. They have a rule of threes. Have you ever seen an interior designer put 4 pillows on the sofa to accessorize a room? No, they use three. More interesting.

Likewise, when they decorate a shelf with vases or objects, they don’t use 2 or 4, they use 3 of varying heights, sizes and colors. More interesting to the human eye, more engaging.

You also see the rule of thirds play out in newscasts. You don’t see the news anchor smack dab in the middle of the frame talking about the news that night do you? You see them off to one side, thereby leaving room to the right of their head for images, pictures and video to support what they’re talking about.

So in your videos, I want you to forget symmetry and remember the rule of thirds.
